Kitbashing a Video Rental Store and Yakitori Restaurant from a Single Kit

The goal of this project was to convert an Outland Model’s ‘Modern 3-Story Building / Shop’ into two unique structures. Structure projects have focused on producing two buildings from a single kit. In this instance, I wanted to complete both buildings simultaneously to illustrate the versatility of these inexpensive models.

The video store is inspired by a long-since-closed independent retailer that I grew up with and influenced by Blockbuster Video. The Yakitori restaurant is a lesser-known restaurant-style in North America but is a typical restaurant throughout Japan. Numerous yakitori restaurants operate hidden in the back alleys of crowded cities and have a mysterious underground essence about them. I attempted to duplicate that same feeling by tucking the restaurant behind a roller door on the back of a building.

This project was also an opportunity for me to understand the capabilities of my Ender 3 Pro. I printed some crude interior details and rooftop items, and I’m satisfied with the results; the level of detail suits my purpose. I’m most pleased with the fire escapes – they will be a recurring item used throughout the layout.
