This structure is a kitbash inspired by the Oregon State Hospital – the infamous mental health facility featured in ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.’
The actual hospital is only a few stories tall and is a sprawling facility with hundreds of rooms, so my model is a loose interpretation of the front façade. I combined the aesthetics of the original hospital with the design of the Outland Models kit. The addition of the freeze, pediment, and vestibule completely transformed the kit into and credible representation of the original.
I printed the back panel as one complete piece, and I am unhappy with the results. It may not be evident in the video, but there is quite a bit of banding, and the surface is very uneven. This is not uncommon in PLA printers and is a know limitation. I can print solid walls for the future, but I will only be able to do so as flat panels where I use the bed surface as the front face – it creates a fine texture that is acceptable. I will have to add details in window frames after the fact.
The Oregon State Hospital was a fun project, and overall, I’m pleased with the results. Thanks for watching!
