Progress on the layout continues at a steady pace, and it’s apparent that the unweathered rolling stock sticks out like a sore thumb. The Tomix JNR Kiha 26 passenger train is a great running, dependable locomotive, but the factory colours are jarring. I wanted the train to appear as it had been neglected for decades, so I opted for weathering it with a very heavy-handed touch. I used a combination of craft store paint, and India ink washes to achieve the look I wanted. I’m reasonably pleased with the results, and this passenger set now blends in with the rest of the layout.

An idea perhaps…. If the train is run by survivors some may opt to paint a car in jarring graffiti style paints or something like the Partridge family bus as a point of color or joy to stand out against the bleak tones of abandonment. Or if going for the somber tone have the painting process only partly done and then weathered as if the person driving the painting moved on or perished. Maybe too much thought.
Awesome work! Very inspired. Thank you for sharing!

This is a great idea! I have been working on graffiti templates and I should be able to vandalize these cars!
